The history of Judo goes back far in time, we end up in the time we lived as monkeylikes in trees. During the long way from ape to human, the romp was an important function. Even now, the period where young memmals, but also young humanchildren, much romp and play with eachother, is the time they learn the most. During this play they're learning much about the possibilities of their body, they learn how to get along with eachother and discover much new movements.

The word judo literally means: the soft way. Many hundreds of years ago a little Chinese boy, Li-Tei-Feng, was standing at the bank of the mighty Jantsee and overlooked the yellowcolored water. Li-Fei-Teng was little and weak and impressed about the force of the great river. "I wish I were as strong as the Jantsee" he thought. Suddenly it became pitch-dark and a bit later a typhoon raged trough the land, which destroyed and took along everything. Li-Tei-Feng pushed himself at the ground and made himself as small as possible. When the storm was over, the boy looked around. Everything was destroyed or blown away and the mighty trees were broken like matches. He was amazed to see that a little tree was still alive: a small puny willow. The small willow didn't offer resistance against the devastating power of the typhoon, but went along with his power. The strength of the typhoon didn't matter; he didn't experienced resistance, because the willow every time bend, sometimes so far his crown reached the ground. After the terrible storm the willow was the only survivor in the wide area. This principle of give way became the most important principle in judo.

With judo clothing plays a big part. Via many ways of catching the judocoat or -shorts is tried to unbalance the opponent and throwing or control him on the ground. In the past there also wasn't a weightclass in judo. But this moment the judokas are divided by weight. In many forms of wrestling the weight is very important. The heavier the athlete, the bigger the chance for victory.
